What Are Impact Windows?
Impact windows are built with laminated glass: two or more panes bonded together with a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer. When struck by debris, the glass cracks but stays in the frame. There is no catastrophic breach, no interior pressure spike, no flying glass.
Every impact window FAS Exteriors installs carries a Florida Product Approval (FL#) number, meaning it has been independently tested to the large missile impact standard and cyclic pressure protocol required by the Florida Building Code. Windows destined for Miami-Dade or Broward County carry a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance (NOA), the strictest certification in the country.

PGT WinGuard Series
PGT’s WinGuard line’s engineered in Venice, Florida and offers one of the broadest impact certifications in the market. Available in aluminum and vinyl frames, it has achieved Design Pressure (DP) ratings from DP 40 to DP 70 depending on configuration. PGT‘s WinGuard line’s suitable for coastal exposures including Exposure D properties nearest Tampa Bay and the Gulf.
Simonton StormBreaker Plus
Simonton’s StormBreaker Plus combines vinyl’s thermal performance with impact-rated laminated glass. It’s Energy Star-certified and meets Florida Product Approval requirements statewide. Simonton‘s StormBreaker Plus is a strong choice for inland properties in Orange County and Hillsborough County, where energy efficiency’s the primary driver along with storm protection.

Why Choose Impact Windows Over Storm Shutters?
Storm shutters are code-compliant in most WBDRs, but they require manual deployment before every storm and storage the rest of the year. Impact windows are permanent, passive protection, with no action required when a watch is posted.
Insurance discounts are typically higher for permanent impact protection than for shutters. Florida’s wind mitigation law (Statute 627.0629) requires insurance carriers to offer discounts for verified storm-protective features. Homes with impact windows on all openings routinely see wind premium reductions of 15 to 45 percent, verified through a licensed wind mitigation inspection.

Installation Process
Every FAS Exteriors project follows the same five-step sequence, designed to move from your first call to a passed county inspection with no surprises and nothing falling through the cracks.
Step 1: Free In-Home Assessment
A FAS Exteriors project manager visits your home, measures every window opening, pulls the current code requirements for your address, and identifies the FL#-certified products that meet your wind zone and exposure category. No obligation.
Step 2: Permit and Product Ordering
We pull all permits, we handle the paperwork with your county building department, and we order products from the manufacturer with your specific configurations.
Step 3: Installation Day
Our licensed installation crew removes existing windows and installs new ones according to the manufacturer’s approved installation method, the method referenced on the FL# document and required for code compliance. We complete all anchoring, flashing, and sealing to specifications.
Step 4: Inspection and Close-Out
We schedule and pass the county inspection, and you receive documentation of the completed permit. This record’s what your insurance company and future buyers will ask for.
Step 5: Wind Mitigation Inspection (Optional but Recommended)
We can coordinate a licensed wind mitigation inspector to document your upgrade on form OIR-B1-1802, which you submit to your insurance carrier to begin receiving your premium discount. The inspection typically costs $75-150 and pays for itself within the first policy year.
My Safe Florida Homes Program
FAS Exteriors is an approved contractor under the My Safe Florida Homes Wind Mitigation Grant program. Qualifying homeowners can receive grants of up to $10,000 toward hurricane protection upgrades including impact windows. Eligibility’s based on home value, location, and completion of a state wind mitigation inspection.
